lipflip – Silent Hill f opens with a deeply unsettling family story centered on protagonist Hinako. She lives with an abusive, alcoholic father, a submissive mother, and an absent sister. The sister appears only in flashbacks, her face hidden to heighten mystery. The game takes place in the remote village of Ebisugaoka during the early 1960s, setting the stage for something horrific to unfold.

Unlike previous entries, Silent Hill f focuses more on psychological tension than jump scares. While scares still appear, the game constantly pressures both Hinako and the player. It introduces a sanity gauge alongside the traditional health meter. Weapons have limited durability, forcing players to choose fights carefully.
During a two-hour demo, I found the village eerily empty as Hinako fled her home looking for someone to talk to. The atmosphere grows stranger as a kei truck blocks access to the shop and a crushed bird lies nearby. Soon, a sinister fog and unnatural red undergrowth attack four high school students.
Hinako must run and evade terrifying marionette-like creatures. A “focus mode” activated by pressing L1 burns sanity but improves dodging and counterattack prompts. Hinako is not a fighter. Even with a steel pipe, her attacks feel sluggish, and heavy swings take time to charge and aim. Facing multiple enemies becomes tense, requiring frequent use of recovery items.
The game features miniature Shinto shrines called hokora, which serve as save points scattered around Ebisugaoka. Hinako’s isolation deepens when a friend repeatedly calls her a “traitor.” The game’s horror feels distinctly Japanese, emphasizing psychological dread over brute force. Hinako’s sister remains shrouded in mystery, with scribbled-out journal entries and obscured flashbacks deepening the intrigue.
Innovative Sanity System and Atmospheric Storytelling Build Intense Horror
Silent Hill f’s sanity system adds a fresh layer to the gameplay. While not entirely new—Eternal Darkness on GameCube used a similar mechanic over 20 years ago—it feels modern and relevant. Some items restore sanity, while others can be offered at shrines for currency to buy charms that boost Hinako’s stats.
During the demo, I purchased a stamina-boosting charm and nearly saved enough for another before falling to scarecrows disguised as high schoolers. These scarecrows introduce puzzle elements, requiring players to remove thorns from one figure who won’t attack. Finding the pattern among the group challenges players to think strategically.

The game excels at building atmosphere, from its fog-covered village to the unsettling red undergrowth. A collapsing moment after a fight emphasizes Hinako’s vulnerability, enhancing the emotional impact. The presence of a masked fox spirit guiding Hinako through blood-soaked, dreamlike temple areas adds a supernatural mystery. The spirit knows Hinako’s name, deepening the game’s eerie, personal tone.
Silent Hill f launches on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on September 25, 2025. This demo suggests the full game will deliver a compelling mix of psychological horror, strategic combat, and atmospheric storytelling. Fans of nuanced, tension-filled horror will find much to anticipate.
