Edit Videos Directly in Google Drive’s New Feature

lipflip – Google has introduced a new feature that allows users to edit videos directly within Google Drive using the Google Vids app. When previewing a video in Drive on a supported browser, users may notice an “Open” button in the top-right corner. Clicking it launches the video in Google Vids, enabling users to trim footage, add music and text, and apply other basic edits without third-party software.

After opening a clip in Vids, the app creates a new version of the file. Users must save or export this version separately. This approach preserves the original file while offering easy in-browser editing for short, pre-uploaded videos. Google also includes access to Veo, its AI-powered video assistant, within the app, making it easier to enhance content quickly.

Google for Education provides a free course to help users learn how to use Vids effectively. This feature streamlines video editing within the Google ecosystem, but not everyone can access it. Only paid account holders—such as those on Workspace business and enterprise plans, nonprofit organizations, and users with Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons—can use it.

Access, Compatibility, and Limitations for Using Google Vids in Drive

Google Vids is available by default to supported organizations unless administrators have restricted access to Google Docs. It also remains available to anyone who purchased Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons before those services were phased out earlier this year. Additionally, Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers qualify for access.

To use Vids, users must open videos in a compatible browser. The tool supports the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge, although Edge is restricted to Windows systems. Compatibility with other browsers may be inconsistent. Supported video formats include MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM, with limits set at 35 minutes per clip and a maximum file size of 4GB.

These limitations make the tool best suited for shorter content, such as educational videos, social media clips, or corporate presentations. For larger or more complex projects, traditional desktop editing software may still be necessary. However, for quick edits and collaboration, Vids offers a seamless experience integrated directly within the Google Drive environment.

Looking ahead, this feature reflects Google’s broader push to integrate creative tools into its Workspace platform. By giving users the ability to edit video in the cloud without installing additional software, Google continues to position itself as a leader in productivity and content creation. Whether for educators, professionals, or nonprofit teams, Vids represents a practical and streamlined option for everyday video editing needs.
