JEDEC Introduces LPDDR6 Memory at 14,400 MT/s

lipflip â€“ JEDEC has officially released the LPDDR6 memory standard, known as JESD209-6. This launch comes five years after DDR5’s market debut. LPDDR6 significantly raises peak data rates to between 10,667 MT/s and 14,400 MT/s. This translates to roughly 28.5 to 38.4 GB/s of bandwidth.

The new standard targets the growing demands of mobile devices and advanced AI systems. It emphasizes higher speed alongside improved power efficiency to extend battery life and reduce heat. Key improvements include a dual-sub-channel architecture, which splits each 24-bit memory channel into two 12-bit sub-channels. This design shortens access paths and lowers latency.

Additionally, LPDDR6 offers flexible burst-length control that allows seamless switching between 32-byte and 64-byte data transfers. These innovations improve overall performance, enabling faster and more responsive memory access. The specification also supports dynamic power modes to optimize energy use during varying workloads.
