lipflip – Sony is again under scrutiny for its PlayStation Network (PSN) security after a popular trophy hunter, dav1d_123, had his account hacked. Despite promises of improved security since the infamous 2011 PSN breach that exposed 77 million accounts, many users continue to report stolen login credentials. The most recent victim, dav1d_123, lost access to his PSN account on October 7th, even though he had enabled two-factor authentication (2FA) through Authy.

This incident has reignited concerns about the adequacy of Sony’s security measures and customer support. Trophy hunters, who often amass thousands of in-game achievements, are frequent targets of hacking due to the high value of their accounts. As seen in previous cases, including the high-profile theft of Hakoom’s account in 2024, hackers can easily profit from selling stolen login information on black market sites and social media platforms.
GGmuks, a fellow gamer and friend of dav1d_123, took to social media to share the details of the hack. He explained that, despite the use of strong security measures, the breach was successful. His efforts to reach Sony’s support team were fruitless, leading him to take an unorthodox approach—messaging the hacker directly. Shockingly, the hacker responded and revealed some troubling insights into PSN’s internal processes.
Customer Support Security Failures Exposed by Hacker
The hacker, identified as “Zzyuj,” shared information about how they were able to gain access to the account. Zzyuj claimed that convincing PSN customer support to reset an account’s login credentials is surprisingly easy. According to the hacker, support agents only need to be provided with the account’s user name to unlock access. This troubling revelation points to potential lapses in Sony’s training and security protocols.
Zzyuj also hinted at the possibility that some customer support agents might be working in lower-cost regions and earning minimal wages. These agents, as per the hacker, could be more susceptible to external pressures or bribery, leading to compromised account security. This would explain how a number of high-profile accounts have been targeted and accessed.
This isn’t the first time Sony’s customer support has come under fire. In 2024, a video surfaced showing a program used by PSN support called “PACMAN.” The software displayed sensitive data, such as payment details and console serial numbers, which raised red flags about how PSN handles user information. Critics argue that this software exposes fundamental flaws in Sony’s approach to user privacy and security.

Gamers are calling for greater transparency from Sony regarding these ongoing breaches. They demand more rigorous training for customer support staff and more robust security measures to protect user data. As Sony faces mounting pressure, the company has yet to provide a comprehensive response to these claims. The latest incident involving dav1d_123 highlights the growing concerns among players about the long-term safety of their PSN accounts. With the increasing number of reported breaches, players fear that unless Sony takes immediate action, more accounts will continue to be targeted.
