Peladn launches first Thunderbolt 5 eGPU dock with top ports

lipflip – Peladn has launched its latest eGPU graphics dock, the Link S-3, targeting desktop users with ATX or SFX power supplies. Unlike its previous models and competitors, the Link S-3 chooses Thunderbolt 5 over OCuLink for connectivity. This decision offers several additional features through a single port. Including 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, 140W Power Delivery, and an M.2 SSD expansion slot.

The Link S-3 arrives less than a month after Peladn released its Y01 mini-PC. Which competes with models like the GMKtec EVO-X2. While the Y01 is built around an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU. The Link S-3 focuses solely on external GPU support with a different design philosophy. Its size and form resemble the Minisforum DEG1 external GPU dock. Currently priced at $99 on Amazon, but the Link S-3 offers a more advanced connection standard.

Peladn’s earlier docks, such as the Link S-2. Relied on OCuLink ports that support up to 64 Gbps bandwidth for desktop graphics cards. The new Link S-3, however, uses two Thunderbolt 5 ports. Theoretically, Thunderbolt 5 offers an 80 Gbps bandwidth. But in practice, it is limited to PCIe 4.0 x4 pass-through, capping bandwidth at 64 Gbps. This may introduce slightly higher latency compared to OCuLink, potentially affecting peak performance in certain scenarios.

Features and Availability of the Peladn Link S-3

Beyond bandwidth, the Link S-3 brings features missing from most OCuLink docks. It includes a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port powered by Realtek’s RTL8156B chip, enhancing wired network speed and stability. The dock also offers an SD card reader, a 10 Gbps USB Type-A port. And an M.2 2280 SSD slot supporting PCIe 3.0 x1 speeds. These additions expand the dock’s usability beyond graphics acceleration, appealing to users who want extra connectivity options.

Peladn has priced the Link S-3 at CNY 1,599 (approximately $223) for the Chinese market, with shipping set to start on July 26. The company has not yet announced plans for global availability or pricing. For desktop users seeking a versatile eGPU dock, the Link S-3’s combination of Thunderbolt 5 connectivity and expanded ports may provide a compelling alternative to OCuLink-based models. Its additional features like 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and M.2 SSD support also enhance productivity for creative professionals and gamers alike.
